Just over a year ago, my good friend Dave Jones posted a video review of the extremely versatile Digilent Analog Discovery multi-function instrument on his Web site, EEVblog.com. (See “Dave Jones does a video review of the Digilent Analog Discovery, which is based on a Spartan-6 FPGA.”) Now Digilent has produced an encore product in the form of the Analog Discovery 2 that implements:

  • A 2-channel, 100Msamples/sec USB digital oscilloscope with 14 bits of resolution and differential inputs
  • A 2-channel, 100Msamples/sec, 10MHz arbitrary function generator with AM/FM modulation
  • A stereo audio amplifier to drive external headphones or speakers
  • A 16-channel, 100Msamples/sec digital logic analyzer and bus decoder
  • A 16-channel, 100Msamples/sec pattern generator
  • A 16-channel virtual digital I/O port for including buttons, switches, and LEDs
  • A 2-input/output digital trigger for linking multiple instruments
  • A single-channel DVM (AC, DC, ±25V)
  • A 1Hz-to-10MHz Network analyzer – Bode, Nyquist, Nichols transfer diagrams
  • A Spectrum Analyzer – power spectrum and spectral measurements (noise floor, SFDR, SNR, THD, etc.)
  • Multiple Digital Bus Analyzers (SPI, I²C, UART, Parallel)
  • Two programmable power supplies (0 to +5V , 0 to -5V @50-700mA, 500mW max)

Digilent Analog Discovery 2 Module

Like the original Analog Discovery Instrument, the Analog Discovery 2 instrument is based on a Xilinx Spartan-6 FPGA that gives it the programmability and flexibility needed by this extremely versatile product. There's also a slick, new transparent case. Here’s a block diagram of the product:

You can see that the Spartan-6 FPGA runs everything in this product. Here’s a 6-minute video describing this new Digilent Analog Discovery 2:

The product sells for $279 and academic pricing is available. (Please contact Digilent for information relating to academic pricing.)
