A visit to Cadence for a quick demo of the FPGA-based Protium SoC Rapid Prototyping Platform—on video

Last month, Cadence announced its 2nd-generation Protium SoC Rapid Prototyping Platform based on Xilinx Virtex-7 2000T 3D FPGAs and the Xilinx Vivado Design Suite. (See “Cadence announces 2nd-generation Protium SoC rapid prototyping platform based on two to eight Virtex-7 2000T 3D FPGAs.”) To see it in action, I went over to Cadence and shot a short video interview with Juergen Jaeger, Senior Manager of Product Marketing in Cadence’s System & Verification Group. Juergen had a demo set up with the Protium SoC Rapid Prototyping Platform emulating an SoC that looked like this:

The Protium platform emulates the SoC hardware in this system at 18MHz, which is fast enough to boot Linux in 30 seconds—so you can get some real software development work done long before you have silicon using this platform. That’s the main reason behind the development of the Protium SoC Rapid Prototyping Platform.

Juergen also showed me a daughter card that plugs into the Protium. It models several different types of memory including SRAM, DDR3 SDRAM, DDR4 SDRAM, and Flash memory. The card is based on a Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA controlling a bank of on-board DDR3 SDRAM. Here’s a short video explanation of that card:
