If you need help understanding how to manage the 2-line character LCD which is found on many of the Xilinx development boards, here are some interesting and useful resources gathered from a web search. I've humbly titled this post Everything you need to know about the onboard LCD.
If anyone cares to add their own HD44780-related helps or links, please do so.
1. The datasheet for the LCD controller, the Hitachi HD44780. Here.
The various commands and modes, including character shifts, are described in the controller datasheet.
2. Two-part 'how to use' article, published in 1997: part 1part 2
Creating user-defined graphics is covered in part 1
4. Here's a nifty page for building custom characters for the HD44780. Here.
5. Here's an online (Java) emulator for an HD44780 LCD !! (also downloadable for offline use) Here.
I haven't tried this, but it looks very useful for the newbie.
Hope this helps.

SIGNATURE: README for newbies is here: http://forums.xilinx.com/t5/New-Users-Forum/README-first-Help-for-new-users/td-p/219369
Summary: 1. Read the manual or user guide. Have you read the manual? Can you find the manual? 2. Search the forums (and search the web) for similar topics. 3. Do not post the same question on multiple forums. 4. Do not post a new topic or question on someone else's thread, start a new thread! 5. Students: Copying code is not the same as learning to design. 6 "It does not work" is not a question which can be answered. Provide useful details (with webpage, datasheet links, please). 7. You are not charged extra fees for comments in your code. 8. I am not paid for forum posts. If I write a good post, then I have been good for nothing.
