ML605 - Not all clock capable pins available on FMC?

Jump to solution

In comparing the pinouts listed in the Hardware Users Guide for the ML605 (ug534.pdf, Table 1-28, e.g.) with the schematics for the ML605 (xtp052.pdf), it seems that not all of the pins that are connected to clock capable banks on the FPGA are identified as such.  Specifically, the following pins on the HPC FMC are not identified as 'clock capable' (with a '_CC' suffix):

LA_04 (SRCC?) <= tied to bank 22 of the Virtex 6 FPGA

LA_28 (MRCC?) <= tied to bank 23 of the Virtex 6 FPGA

LA_33 (SRCC?) <= tied to bank 23 of the Virtex 6 FPGA

HB_5 (SRCC?) <= tied to bank 12 of the Virtex 6 FPGA

HA_21 (SRCC?) <= tied to bank 21 of the Virtex 6 FPGA

Why are these not identified as clock capable?  Can we use them safely as such?

The VITA-57.1 specification defines which pins on the FMC interface are clock capable, there is no restriction against connecting a non-CC pin to a pin on the FPGA that can be used as a clock input.  When you design a FMC module you must put the clocks that are sourced from the module to the carrier on the CC pins that are defined by the specifiction or the module will only be able to used with a single board that matches your module.
