Question about Installing SODIMM memory on ZCU104 board

Jump to solution

Hi,

I have recently purchased a ZCU104 evaluation board and have been planning to install a SODIMM memory on it since it is not provided by the vendor and it has an empty slot. The issue is that the memory slot is covered by a holey metal cage ( I guess for soft errors!) and I do not know how to remove this metal cage without damaging the board. I was wondering if there is a correct method to remove this metal cage or I just have to loosen up the pins that hold it in place and remove it.\

Thanks.

Hello @shayanmo

Yes opening that metal cage is the only option for you.

Even though from top view it looks like you can't remove it; with little force it should be possible.

Brute force surely will help...!!!

Thank you

Is there not an official documentation for removing the cage?  Is this the official Xilinx recommended way to replace the SODIMM package?

I'm reluctant to take a screwdriver to my $2500 FPGA...

Hello @onofognol  and @shayanmo

Obviously its not a recommended process. We don't want users to damage these boards.

That's why I clearly mentioned, Please go ahead with the brute force.

Our evaluation boards are only meant for evaluation and we don't recommend much physical playing around because they have so many ESD parts, that might get damaged.

So if someone wishes to characterize the new memories, they can go ahead with there own risk.

Our recommendation would be to compare the memory performance from there datasheets and how our MIG controller incorporates with them (refer to PG150).

Xilinx official recommendation is not to make any physical change on EVBs !!!

Thank you

Hello @shayanmo  and @onofognol

Edit to my earlier post. Yes, you are allowed to open the cage. since there is no memory installed on the ZCU104 you will end up opening the cage for adding SODIMM memory module.

Apologies for my earlier response.

Thank you
