ZC702 failure


By feeding a zc702 to the power supply and activating the switch, smoke started to come out near the ethernet connector. Looking closely it seems that the Marvell Alaska component 88E1116R (U35 in the schematic) is the damaged one. The zc702 had never been used before. The only thing that has been done: the zc702 has been connected with an analog devices board (an evm that mounts adc converters) via fmc connectors. Both cards were turned off when they were connected!
is it possible that it is due to the creation of a short circuit of some pins on the fmc connector? is it more likely that these were electrostatic discharge phenomena? (no precautions had been taken but the card was not in the presence of disturbing sources)
is it possible that the damaged part is limited? in that case how can I verify it? Is it possible to send the board to the manufacturer or to third parties only to ascertain the nature of the problem?

As you have just prooved,

   chips are powered internaly by smoke, and when the smoke escapes the chip stops working,,,


you ask, is "XX" possible, 

   Pay enough money and anything is possible, ...

Was it ESD, unlikely to cause a part to smoke, that takes a fair bit of power and esd dammage des not tend to creat power shorts like this,


Ethernet is transformer isolated, so even if there was 50 volts on the ethernet cable its ok.


Sounds like you have shorted something or applie power backwards, or applied excess voltages .

If your board is under warranty (i.e. <90 days since it was purchased from), then your can submit an RMA request for the board replacement, however this needs to be approved by Xilinx first. For more information about warranty contact your DFAE or XFAE or refer this AR#45432.

If your board is not under warranty ,then you can contact Whizz Systems, who are our contract manufacturer and are best placed to repair Xilinx Development Systems Products (Boards and Kits) at the cost of the customer.
