ZCU106 power monitoring question

Jump to solution

While running the Targeted Reference design on the ZCU106 board we wish to monitor the power consumption. To do so we used the SCUI (XTP495) and the Maxim PowerTool.

Different readings were noticed for the same power rail

Table 3-54 in UG1244 describes the PMBus address and the associated power rail.  For Address 0x13 the power rail is VCCINT.

With board in reset, the Maxim PowerTool reports a voltage of 0.85 volts and current of 0.54 Amps for the VCCINT (address 0x13) , while the SCUI reports a voltage of 0.85 volts and current of 0.11 Amps.

Screen captures shown below.

I wish to understand why the two reading are not similar. The board was in the same state and both these snapshot were taken one after the other. I would expect the current readings to be similar not a factor of 5 different.

It was also noted that the SCUI and Maxim PowerTool reported different current values for VCCINT under other conditions.

No changes were made to the settings in the INA226 power monitor chip, or the Maxim power regulators.

Any suggestions as to why the SCUI and Maxim PowerTool report such difference?

Hi @jott ,

Due to the tolerance present in Maxim power measurement tool solution, you are seeing the some amount of difference between SCUI and Maxim Readings.

Note : Maxim will give you live readings, i.e current will be varying. SCUI will give you at that instant, what was the value ( it will not give live values).

For accurate current measurments you need to use INA226.

Hope this helps.
