Zynq-7000 SoC ZC702: FMC connector

In the project I'm working on, a connection must be made between a zynq ZC702 (Xilinx Zynq-7000 SoC ZC702 Evaluation Kit, https://www.xilinx.com/products/boards-and-kits/ek-z7-zc702-g.html) and an analog devices board AD9249 (https://www.analog.com/en/design-center/evaluation-hardware-and-software/evaluation-boards-kits/EVAL-AD9249.html#eb-overview). To test the use of both boards, a connection must be made between the two boards in order to verify that the vhdl code allows the zynq to synchronize with the ad9249 and acquire data. For this purpose I wanted to understand if it is possible to make a direct connection between the two fmc connectors (male in the AD9249 and female in the ZC702) or it is necessary to use an intermediate board capable of connecting only a few pins of both connectors like: https://fmchub.github.io/projects/FMC_LPC_BREAKOUT/Datasheet/FMC_LPC_BREAKOUT_datasheet.html My doubt is due to the fact that looking at the pinouts of both connectors there would seem to be pins dedicated to gnd, power supplies or others (like CLK0_M2C that I dont’t understand what is used for. Can you provide some references explaning the purpose of all the pins in the fmc connector of the zc702?) . So connecting the two fmc to each other could short-circuit the gnd and / or other of the two boards leading to failure. I would like to understand if it is possible to connect the two fmc connectors directly by placing fpga and adc on top of each other.

At the following link you can find the schematic of the AD9249 including the pinouts of the fmc connector: https://wiki.analog.com/_media/resources/eval/ad9249_fmc_brd_designfiles.zip

Here instead, on page 71, the pinouts of the ZC702 are available:

Re: Zynq-7000 SoC ZC702: FMC connector

Hello pietrom@kth.se ,

Please check this forum topic that may provide you some info in relation to this matter?

You may need to obtain FMC to FMC cable, which are a bit expensive. https://www.xilinx.com/products/boards-and-kits/1-988bi5.html

Hope this helps.

Re: Zynq-7000 SoC ZC702: FMC connector

All FMC cards should be based on the VITA 57 standard.

As long as they meet that standard, they will be compatible for power and gnd pins.

The tricky part can be verifying that the ZC702's FMC connector has the proper IO pins populated to mate with your ADC card.  Some eval boards do not fully populate all of the FMC pins on their FMC connectors.  It's not hard just a little tedious.  Just look at your ADC card and make a list of all the FMC pins that are used for IO.  Then look at the ZC702 User Guide (UG850) and verify that the coresponding pins from your list are populted for the ZC702.
