booting linux with sd card without rootfs.cpio in rootfs partition

Hello all,

I am trying to build linux kernel image through petalinux 2018.2.

According to UG1186, I made 2 partitions, BOOT and rootfs on the SD card, and copied BOOT.BIN and Image.ub on BOOT partition.

However, I didn't copy and extract rootfs.cpio file on the rootfs partition.

Still,

when I see the booting logs on the serial terminal, I can see the kernel booting and rootfile system directory inside the "/" directory

Just curious that where the root filesystem has come, when I havent copied the rootfs.cpio in rootfs directory.

Very likely your FIT image (image.ub) contains also rootfs ramdisk image and default config pointing to ramdisk boot. Check this AR https://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/68704.html.
