JESD204 PHY core: what does 'simplify sharing serial transceiver channels' mean?

Jump to solution

Hi everyone,

I am currently working with JESD204 PHY and JESD204 cores on Vivado 2016.1. I am trying to understand a reference design, where these cores come into play. Looking at their documentation, I see,

"JESD204 PHY core implements JESD204B physical interface to simplify sharing serial transceiver channels b/w Tx and Rx cores"

Can someone explain what the above sentence means? Especially the simplify sharing serial transceiver channels b/w Tx and Rx cores  part.

What is the purpose of sharing channels b/w Tx and Rx cores?

Thanks in advance,

The purpose of sharing JESD204PHY(GT) is to save GT resources, as you may know, for ultraScale FPGA, one GT quad consists of four GT channels, the four GT channels has four GT RXs and four GT TXs, if JESD204 PHY is configured as TX and four lanes, and utilize this GT quad, the four GT TX channels will be utilized, the four GT RX channels are still unused, in many cases, users want to utilize the unused four GT RX channels, using JESD204 PHY is an easy way to get this done.
