Xilinx and Movandi have teamed up on an Open-RAN (Radio Unit RU) that companies are demonstrating at the virtual BIG 5G event September 22-24. This continues to advance open 5G architecture and innovation and, most importantly, accelerates deployments.
Networks have become increasingly complex with the advent of 5G, densification, and richer, more demanding applications. To tame this complexity, we cannot use traditional human-intensive means of deploying, optimizing, and operating a network. Instead, networks must be self-driving and should be able to leverage new learning-based technologies to automate operational network functions and reduce OPEX.
Movandi is excited to collaborate with Xilinx to help design the standards that will optimize today’s networks and build a more open network infrastructure to accelerate new 5G technologies.
Open-RAN Radio Unit Demonstration Platform
Movandi has developed a platform with Xilinx for a mmWave Open-RAN system. Here you see that we're using Xilinx RF SOC Gen 3 as a modem, connecting to our front end module of 32 elements, 28 gigahertz and we're showing phenomenal results of -31 dB and EVM, which basically is perfect for up to 64QAM modulation.
We're only using 32 elements modules, the whole front end, which we're using Xilinx chip sets as well as Movandi antennas and module. It is very modular approach that can be used in many different applications. For example, it could be used to build an array with a thousand element antennas as well as very small numbers, all the way going to as little as four elements antennas.
This can address many different mmWave radio applications; we support 28 gigahertz, 24 gigahertz as well as 39 gigahertz RF2 bands. And we can address all the way from gNodeB applications to the CPE consumer products, including small cells for indoor and outdoor applications with the Movandi BeamXR 5G extender to expand 5G home and mobile deployments to more places.Movandi Solutions Across Entire 5G mmWave Ecosystem
In the video we're demonstrating the latest generation ORAN mmWave RU solution. We're combining technology from Xilinx in the form of an RFSoC Gen 3 device with the latest BeamX radio technology from Movandi. The RFSoC provides the baseband processing for the ORAN RU and the high IF signal for the BeamX mmWave front endto provide a fully integrated ORAN mmWave RU solution.
