Invalid kernel config for ZCU102

I am adding a custom bsp and dist layer to yocto and finally got everything built but couldn't get the dev board to boot.   I figured out it was the kernel, so booted the pre-built and pulled the config out of /proc.

The default kernel config for the zcu102 is xilinx_zynqmp_defconfig and it is vastly different from the pre-built config.   So then I ran menuconfig and this produced config that allowed the kernel to boot.

Has anybody else tried building the images from Yocto and seen this problem?  What is the point of having a default config that doesn't work?

thanks,

jeff
