Programming Spansion Flash Memory

Hi!

I have designed a board with a Virtex-4 FX20, DDR memory and Flash. I use a parallell NOR flash from Spansion (data sheet: http://www.spansion.com/datasheets/s29ws-j_00_a6_e.pdf) and I have added an EMC to my XPS project. I have configured the latencies and any other relevant options but when I try to program the flash (using the built-in tool in XPS) I get an error message that the Flashwriter was unable to query the CFI device.

The module support CFI, as stated in the datasheet.

Has anyone had any experience with Spansion flash memory or seen any other similar problems?

Johan

Re: Programming Spansion Flash Memory

Hi

Have you solved the problem?

I get the same error on my spartan-3AN board:

* ERROR: Flashwriter application reported an error: Unable to successfully query target part layout using CFI!

Re: Programming Spansion Flash Memory

No, I never got i working before the projected ended. I haven't done any work on my board in the past two months. I tried contacting Xilinx support but they were unable to help me. Next time I will use the same flash memory which is on the evaluation board.

Hi Johan

Ok, I have also contacted Xilinx but they do not have a solution for it.

But they are working on it.

Re: Programming Spansion Flash Memory

I have successfully used the XPS Flashwriter with Spansion S29GL flash on the Avnet Spartan-3A Eval board.  I have ISE/EDK 10.1 with SP2 on each.  It might be worth trying again with updated software if you're still having problems.

Re: Programming Spansion Flash Memory

Hello, can you post some information on how did you made it work? I have spansion S29JL032H flash and mch emc and I'm not able to use it. I don't see even the address lines moving.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Re: Programming Spansion Flash Memory

The project that I used to do this is posted on the Avnet Design Resource Center.  The landing page for the Spartan-3A Eval board is www.em.avnet.com/spartan3a-evl.  The click on "Support Files & Downloads."  The project is called "MicroBlaze Serial Flash Test."

The instructions for using the FlashWriter are not included, but I don't recall anything out of the ordinary.  I'm not sure if your problems were with setting up the project or running the FlashWriter.  I can add some more detail on the FlashWriter itself if it would be helpful.
