SFP interface on Kintex-7 FPGA

Hi all,

I am planning to send data from one KC705 board to our custom board( based on kintex- FPGA) through optical interface. 

I have seen that we can use AXI 1G/2.5G Ethernet Subsystem to meet this requirement. But this IP core needs a purchased license. 

Is there any other IP to do the same? 

One more doubt, When two boards are communicated over optical interface is it mandatory to use ethernet protocol? Can we use any custom serial procol to do the same? 

Any help is appreciated.
