Vivado 2017.3 Licensing Changes

We are very excited to announce the release of Vivado 2017.3 – packed with many features.

You can download Vivado 2017.3 release from Xilinx’s download page and refer to the following user guide for more details on what’s new in Vivado 2017.3 release - UG973: What’s new, Licensing and Installation

In this release of Vivado we are introducing some changes for licensing that we would like to bring to your attention.

Vivado 2017.3 Licensing Changes:

  1. Flex licensing management tools have been upgraded to 11.14.1 version. Some key points to note are:

  • If you are using floating licenses then you must upgrade licensing utilities to Flex 11.14.1 - licensing utilities can be found on the download page of www.xilinx.com
  • If your license file is under one year old then it should work with Vivado 2017.3 after you upgrade the licensing utilities
  • Vivado 2017.3 will be the last release that will support licensing utilities for Flex 11.14.1 for Solaris operating systems
  • We will continue to support licensing utilities for Windows and Linux operating systems

  1. Activation licensing support has been removed

  • Starting with Vivado 2017.3 release – activation licensing support has been removed
  • All the features supported by activation licensing are discontinued including license borrowing
  • Existing activation licenses (starting in 2016.3) have been replaced with certificate based licenses that can be accessed from www.xilinx.com/getlicense

  1. USB Dongle Drivers

  • Using USB dongles for licensing will require you to install drivers on windows

Please refer to AR#47132 for more details on how to install USB dongle drivers on windows.

Re: Vivado 2017.3 Licensing Changes

Hello @akugel,

Please note that this error (“xilinxd exited with status 53”) is typically seen on Windows license servers where the license utilities were downloaded separately and Vivado is not installed.

This error can occur if the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable libraries are not installed on the Windows machine.

Please note that the 11.14.1.0 license utilities require that the machine have the 2015 Microsoft Redistributables installed before running.

This is normally provided as part of the Vivado install, however if/as you are setting up a floating server outside of Vivado, you can obtain the redistributables from Microsoft:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

Therefore, can you please obtain the redistributables from Microsoft link above and installed this on the server and then stop and start the server again and then see the output, as this should fix this issue.

Please try the above and let me know the output.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Anatoli

Re: Vivado 2017.3 Licensing Changes

I have installed 2017.3. I have also installed the drivers and copied the DLLs as outlined in AR# 47132. The Vivado License manager does not see the FLEXID dongle ID. However, my previous installation of ISE 14.6 does still see it. The operating systems is Windows 7, and I have re-booted the system (several times!). The device manager confirms that the driver version for the dongle on USB is 7.50.0.0, which is, I think, what comes from AR# 47132. So how should I proceed?

Re: Vivado 2017.3 Licensing Changes

I  just posted that we had problems with the LMtools creating the service with the wrong account.  it used the "network system" account instead of the "system" account ,   service wouldn't start using the "Network System" account.  We had to manully change the account ins the service to get it to run.    just and FYI.     I guess the permissions are different between the two account on the server.

Re: Vivado 2017.3 Licensing Changes

Hello @kailashprakash,

Currently licensing borrowing isn't support with CB licensing.

Based on why I'm aware of, there was something in the roadmap for certificate license borrowing, but I haven't heard anything about it. So if that's going to happen, won't be soon.

Hope this helps.

Re: Vivado 2017.3 Licensing Changes

Hi-

We have a kind of unique situation in our Enterprise. We have a floating Xilinx license and some stand-alone licenses. For the compiling we do, we need some of the features from the floating license and some from the stand-alone license. We also need to do everything off-network in some situations when we're in the field in remote destinations with no Internet access.

Based on the above description, we would need to license borrow from the floating license and acces features on the stand-alone license. Due to the specifics, we would really like to set up a meeting with an application specialist to discuss.

Is that something you can help us with?

TIA,

James

Re: Vivado 2017.3 Licensing Changes

Hello @mitchjw ,

Please note that license borrowing isn't supported with the Certificate Based licensing methodology.

Please note that if you have your floating license as well as your Node-Locked license on the same machine where you've installed your Vivado tools, then in this case, you don't need access to the Internet at all, as Vivado will be able to detect both licenses locally on this specific PC.

However, if you have your Node-Locked license on the PC where you have Vivado installed, however your Floating license is run somewhere else on the network, i.e. on a main floating license server that is only accessible when you are on a local network, then if the network isn't accessible, in this case your floating license won't be reachable, and hence Vivado will only be able to work with your Node-Locked licenses.

In any case, if you are working with the latest Vivado releases, license borrowing isn't supported, as this is the FlexLM (Flexera) limitations, that is not supported with Xilinx licenses.

There is in fact a Flexera related licensing admin guide (see attached) v11.14.0 "License Administration Guide", chapter "License Borrowing with BORROW", however instructions are not compatible with Xilinx licenses, as it requires to make some s/w changes to make it practical with Xilinx floating licenses.

Hope the above is clear.
