"A valid license was not found for feature 'Synthesis' and/or device 'xc7k325t'", under VIvado 2018.3

Jump to solution

We are using our recently bought Kintex-7 KC705 Evaluation Kits with our floating academic licenses for the Vivado System Edition, that are supposed to give us full device and tool permanent coverage until version 2020.02 (as reported by the License status viewer), but when trying to synthesize to it we get the following error:

[Common 17-345] A valid license was not found for feature 'Synthesis' and/or device 'xc7k325t'. Please run the Vivado License Manager for assistance in determining
which features and devices are licensed for your system.
Resolution: Check the status of your licenses in the Vivado License Manager. For debug help search Xilinx Support for "Licensing FAQ". If you are using a license server, verify that the license server is up and running a version of the xilinx daemon that is compatible with the version of Xilinx software that you are using. Please note that Vivado 2017.3 and later requires upgrading your license server tools to the Flex 11.14.1 tools. Please confirm with your license admin that the correct version of the license server tools are installed.

I opened a SR to Xilinx, as I figure this was a licensing problem that only required updating the license file with the requested device (we're able to run all the way to bitstream on all the Artyx and Zynq-7000 families we have at our lab). But they redirected me to this forum. So, if there is any one there with a similar problem please, we'll appreciate your help here. I've checked dozens of previous answers on this subject, but all seem related to not having the right license or Vivado version (we're using Vivado 2018.3), which is not our case.  We have our FlexLM updated to the 2018 version as well.

I don't know, maybe the XUP floating licensing does not cover these devices, but I least I'd like someone to tell us so before racking our brains here. The node-locked licenses that came with the boards are not practical to us, as the boards are provided to students at the lab that come with their own laptops, in order to check their code. But I'd like to know if this is the only way out.

Hello @achacon ,

The issue is due to the fact that your floating license was started using older versions of lmgrd and xilinxd. They are both v11.6, where as Vivado 2018.x requires that your floating license server started with v11.14 or higher.

Please check this Answer Record for more info: https://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/69377.html

Therefore, please obtain these utilities from the downloads page (https://www.xilinx.com/support/download.html) and provide the .zip file to your floating license admin (please note that there are utilities specifically for Windows OS and also separately – for Linux). Then ask the admin to unzip this anywhere on the server. Then he/she needs to start the floating license server using the lmgrd from this location where he/she has just unzip these. It will then in turn will call the xilinxd vendor daemon (also found from the same location as lmgrd v11.14).  And that is it then, Vivado 2018.3 will then be able to successfully detect and check out the necessary license and your issue will be resolved then.

Kind Regards,
Anatoli Curran,

Hello @achacon ,

Looks like your license isn't visible to Vivado and that would indicate either your Floating license wasn't installed correctly on the main floating license server, or on the client machine, you are not pointing correctly (using XILINXD_LICENSE_FILE environment variable) to this FL license server.

You've indicated this:

We have our FlexLM updated to the 2018 version as well.

However, there is not such a FlexLM v2018

The version of the FlexLM ustilities (both lmgrd and xilinxd) that you whould have started your FL license server with is v11.14 (or higher).

In your case, both lmgrd and also xilinxd are versions v11.14?
If not, then that is the reason why Vivado can't check out the licenses from the server, as Vivado 2017.3 (and newer Vivado releases) won't be able to check out this license unless you upgrade your utilities to v11.14.
Can you please open a command prompt and CD to the location such as e.g.: C:/Xilinx/Vivado/2018.3/bin/unwrapped/win64.o

Then, from here, please run this command: lmutil lmstat –a –c <port_number>@<server_name> (e.g.: lmutil lmstat –a –c 2100@ANATOLI_PC -i).

Then please see if lmgrd is UP and xilinxd is UP too and then, see what version of flexlm utilities the server is/was started with? Do you see v11.14 for both lmgrd and xilinxd?

Can you confirm on the above please?

Thanks in advance.
