Does PS-GTR support 1000BASE-X?

Jump to solution

I was wondering if the 6 Gb/s PS-GTRs on the Zynq UltraScale+ can be configured as 1000BASE-X. The Zynq UltraScale+ TRM, UG1085, only mentions SGMII.

It is my understanding that 1000BASE-X and SGMII are pretty similar.

Hi @khal,

We do not support PS-GTR with 1000BASE-X.

You are right, they are quite similar -

SGMII is intended to be used to connect the MAC to a PHY and uses copper cat5 for communications based on 1000BASE-T; while 1000BASE-x is intended for point to point electrical links on PCB over fibre channel. The main difference between them is autonegotiation capabilities; but SGMII and 1000BASE-X do have similar features, and many devices end up supporting both - for example, our 1000BASE-X PCS/PMA or SGMII core; and many ethernet PHYs.

For this specific question, our GEM with PS-GTR is only supported in SGMII mode.

Hi @nanz!

Do you mean that PS GTR in Zynq UltraScale+ support only Cisco SGMII specification and don't support 1000BASE-X Auto-Negotiation functionality defined in Clause 37 of the IEEE 802.3?

Hi @miloserdin,

Could you please post a new thread on this question so I could answer it from there? This one is from one year ago and old. I'll close it.

For future reference, it will be always good to start a new forum post rather than replying an old one. This way, you will have better chances to get help.

Thank you!
