Hi,
Apple&Intel's Thunderbolt technology seems promising for high speed data transfer over cable.
If I want to utilize this, to transfer data in and out of the FPGA will the standard PCIe core provided by Xilinx be sufficient to interface with the Thunderbolt controller? What else would I need on the FPGA side to achieve say 1GB/s transfer rate? For example a DMA engine???

Hi ,
Standard core is just the Physical+datalink+Transaction layer. You need to have the application layer to initiate data transfer.
For a better use case of the PCIe based designs, take a look at the referance designs mentioned below.
