power consumption at the physical level

hi community, i would like to know how to estimate the power  at the physical level, of an FPGA card while running a code in the SDK?

@zozo-- Do you mean physical measurement of power?

 

  1. If that is the case one of the below technique you may choose 

 

  • It is standard measurement technique either give provision for jumper/series strapping link in series path of power supply rail to measure the current. The Voltage X current is power consumption for that supply rail 

 

  • Other technique is provide very low value precision metal film resistor in series path of power supply rail. The voltage drop across the resistor/Resistance value gives current. You need high precision meter to do this. The Voltage X current is power consumption for that supply rail 

 

  • In case of using soft power modules (EX: Taxas or Maxim) then through GUI itself you can estimate approximate power consumption for each supply rail. For example the TI Power Solutions for measuring power on Xilinx Evaluation Kits described in  https://www.xilinx.com/support/answers/39037.html

 

 

  1. In case if you intended to estimate power, then you can use Xilinx power tools either XPE or Vivad-power in case if design was ready and implemented
  • XILINX Power Estimator tool helps to customer to estimate the power roughly before your design implementation. Download the XPE Spreadsheet from the following link https://www.xilinx.com/products/technology/power.html for the family you want to use. This page also contains links to Power Estimator guides and White Papers

@zozo  You mean realtime estimate? It depends on the board. The ZC702/706 have power regulators you can read.

thanks @umamahe for replying, yeah i'm talking about physical measurements, please is any one of the techniques will give me the power consumed for each module? i mean the processor, memory, bus and so on?

@zozo. Thanks. I am sorry to say that physically you can not measure power for each module separately unless if any supply rail exclusively used for that particular module. For example VCCBRAM is exclusively used for Block RAM supply voltage. So you may have chance to measure Block RAM  power.
