Im trying to build my SDRelease project from ubuntu terminal by manually going into the SDRelease folder of my project and typing the make command but it throws up an error when run from the ubuntu terminal.

When I run it in the SDSoC GUI window the project builds perfectly

Try sourcing the settings64.[csh|sh] script in the SDSoC installation before executing make. This script will setup your environment for running outside the GUI.

In your case:

> source /opt/Xilinx/SDSoC/2015.2.1/settings64.sh
