I'm a beginner in FPGA - needs some guidance please

Jump to solution

Hi all,

I'm an electronics engineer but doesn't really know this field of fpga and cpld.

I had bought the Spartan 3a starter kit and I'll be happy to get some ideas for projects that I can start with.

My goal is to understand as much as I can in this area , by ceating designs in Verilog or VHDL.

Does anybody know a good source for info on relevant projects and which are specifically relevant to the Spartan 3a\3an board?

Thanks in advance, Guy

Start here:

http://www.xilinx.com/products/boards/s3astarter/reference_designs.htm

Download and run every demo design.

Then modifyu each demo, to do something just a bit different (like use another led, or pushbutton, something trivial).  Re-synthesis, re-place and route, and generate new bitstreams.  Download these new bitstreams and make sure they do what you intened.

In no time at all (perhaps a couple of months if you work at it), you will have a good working knowledge of this board, and FPGA devices generally.

There are (were) a lot of class room lab projects for this board, so you will find lots of stuff elesewhere on the web.

Have fun.

Hi , thank you very much for your answer.

I'll try working with these designs.

In addition, are there any projects that can be done from the beginning? Something simple to start with?

Thanks again, Guy

Followed from very useul suggestion from Austin

Answer to your query is in your post . see below

I'm an electronics engineer

I am sure that you might have studied digital electronics .Implement what you have studied in books to your starter board which would be a good start, I suppose.

Later you can do as u like . "Sky is the limit"

Regards

Faisal

Some intro materials, written very simply, with some tutorials and easy beginner design examples and projects, here.
