Too many checkpoint files...

I received the following messages today in Vivado 2017.4 and since google turned up nothing, I wanted to save it here in case someone in the future sees it.

The process to get here was probably irrelevant, but I had disabled debug in a MIG that had been working fine for Artix 7. After disabling debug and attempting to generate a bitstream, it failed in synthesis, reporting "too many checkpoint files associated with the sub design..." followed by "too many black box stub files associated with the sub-design"

The files these messages pointed too looked fine, no spaces in paths, not too long, could be opened, etc.

Closing and re-opening the project did nothing.

The solution was to run "reset_project" from Tcl console.
