Vivado 2016.3 keeps crashing with memory problems/stack dump

I have Vivado 2016.3 running on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

 

Vivado keeps crashing during elaboration.  Before it would not give any messages.  Then I started running as root.  I also added A LOT of swap space -- like over 128G.  My system has 1G RAM.

 

Can anybody please help?  I have to say that the fact that it is impossible to contact any actual Xilinx personnel is a bad mark for Xilinx so far -- not to mention the buggy software.

 

I run:

 

sudo /opt/Xilinx/Vivado/2016.3/bin/vivado -mode gui -jvm Xmx2048m

It is getting to be absurd how hard it is to get Vivado running.  I mean, it is not as if it is freeware!

Review the installation guide, you'll need more than 1G of RAM.  Typical installs are 8G RAM minimum (I'm using 16G).

Ubuntu 14.04 is not supported for Vivado 2016.3. Please go through page-15 of https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx2016_3/ug973-vivado-release-notes-install-license.pdf for list of supported OS.

 

Can you try with 2015.2 as it's supported for 14.04. Please go through page-9 of https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx2015_2/ug973-vivado-release-notes-install-license.pdf

Yeah.  Sorry about that, another typo.  I am using 16.04.

 

At this point I have switched to a bottom-up methodology, since modules of my design do seem to be going through ok.  

 

At least from my experience here, and from various posts on the message boards, it would seem that Vivado does have some sort of memory problem with design of moderate size on Ubuntu 16.04.  I admit it is still possible that this is "operator error", but perhaps something for you guys at Xilinx to keep an eye on.

I had the same problem with older vivado versions (<2016.3) with ubuntu 16.04. Same design with ubuntu 14.04 works.

I hoped the issue was solved with 2016.3, but it doesn't look like. The issue is still there. 

My system is a i7-6700 with 8 cores and 16GB memory.
