Influence of timing constraints

Jump to solution

Hello everyone,

Very basic question here : do timing constraints influence vivado place and route ? Does the software try to meet our needs based on our xdc files ?

Or are those constraints just here to signal errors with the default routing, so that we can fix them with hdl refactoring or manual placement ?

Regards,

Thomas.

Hi @Thomas

To answer your question simply, Yes, timing constraints do influence place and route. In order to meet the timing that you specify for the clocks in your constraints files, Vivado will try to optimally place and route the design to meet timing for all those paths. Of course physical constraints also influence place and route too.

The bigger and more complex the design is, the harder the tool has to work to close timing.
