So that you can have parity, to assist with detecting and correcting errors. One bit of parity per byte of RAM. For a 32-bit wide RAM, 32 bits = 4 bytes, so you have an extra 4 bits for parity data. 32 bits of data plus 4 bits of parity gives you 36-bit.
