Can an LCD monitor accept any frame rate?

Jump to solution

I am generating some image patterns to use on ZC702 and wanted to display it on latest Dell P2415Q monitor.

User manual of the monitor shows a list of resolutions and frame rates. Is it possible to make it display video of any frame rate?

How are industrial cameras used when the specifications says the frame rate is 10+ fps?

HI @lis_user1

Exactly. If the processing is what is limiting is your frame throughput. You can always use a VDMA (as a video buffering IP).
Connect the processing IP output (in AXI4 stream format) to VDMA write side(S2MM) and the read side of VDMA(MM2S) can be connected to HDMI ,or display port interface configured for UHD@30fps.

Thanks

HI @lis_user1

Ideally yes and lower resolutions.
For UHD resolution the maximum frame rate can be 60 fps. Dell P2415Q.  (limited byte the connectivity IP like Display port , HDMI's bandwidth capabilities)

If you go for the lower resolution input like HD(720p) , you can go for higher frame rates.

Do you mean to ask if  a frame of 10+ fps can be displayed on Dell P2415Q for any given resolution?

Thanks

Re: Can an LCD monitor accept any frame rate?

My problem is the FPGA design can only go up to 21 fps at 2K resolution after implementation but I wish to use that to debug the image quality. I have no time to make it meet 60/75/30 fps.

The Dell P2415Q says "The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display. Please change your input timing to 3840X2160,  30Hz or any other monitor listed timing as per the monitor specification". I am wondering whether it's my FPGA issue (V/H_FP, V/H_BP etc) or the monitor only accepts the listed resolution & frame rate.

The standard approach would be to separate display and processing. Processing happens at whatever framerate it can manage, whether that's 0.11Hz (eg. a CPU-based implementation), or 10Hz, or 1000Hz. In the mean time, a separate hardware module operating on a separate block is sending images to the monitor at a consistent 60Hz.

I see. That's useful idea to implement when my current work is done. Thank you.
