If I don't put the AXI4Stream Subset Converter between csi rx and fb wr ip's, pl.dtsi doesn't even include vcap_csi. That is probably because of line 72 at https://github.com/Xilinx/device-tree-xlnx/blob/73e546e312a22d7fb410c28d5c79174d2eb29938/mipi_csi2_rx/data/mipi_csi2_rx.tcl

Even after expected pl.dtsi output is generated, xilinx-video driver fails to parse the devicetree. No /dev/video* , /dev/media*, /dev/v4l-subdev* entry is generated for the mipi blocks. My MIPI TX is a ADV7280M with a analog video as the main video source, so I don't need all the post processing ips in the reference design.

The default assuptoin at this time is that the MIPI CSI2-RX outputs Bayer formated data, which isn't a valid input for the Video Fame Buffer.  And even if the Video Frame Buffer did support it, it is not a valid format for the VCU, which needs to have a YUV formated input.  You can find more information in PG252 in the Source Frame Format section.

The expectation is that your MIPI CSI2-RX Pipeline will look like the one in the ZCU106 Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC VCU TRD and this is how the Device Tree Generator (DTC) will automically generated device tree.  So if you have a differnt configuration you will have to modify your device tree to descript your configuration.

 

MIPI CSI2 Rx -> Demosaic -> Gamma LUT -> VPSS CSC -> VPSS Scaler -> Video Frame Buffer Write IP

 

NOTE:  The output of the Demosaic is RGB and then you use the VPSS CSC to convert it to YUV format, which is what the Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC VCU is expecting.


In your case you are not getting data from a camera, but rather the output of a ADV7280M.  The data sheet for the say "The ADV7280-M outputs video data in an 8-bit YCrCb 4:2:2 format."

According to the documenation for the MIPI CSI2-RX Driver on the Xilinx Wiki, there is support for 8-bit YUV 4:2:2, but you will need to make sure you declare that this is the output format in the device tree.  So you should be able to modify the device tree to declare that the output format is 8-Bit YUV 4:2:2 format, which is a valid input for the Video Frame Buffer.

I have managed to get a /dev/media and /dev/v4lsubdev entry after setting up the ADV7280 device tree and driver.  Do I really need to specify the output format of ADV7280M, isn't the input and output video formats confgured in the runtime?

ADV7280M driver doesn't really expose much to userspace, the API calls it exposes are not supported by the v4l2-ctl version that comes with petalinux 2019.1. Even how to do analog input selection is not clear.

@omerfirmak: I suggest you chenck your pl.dtsi which is generated by petalinux build. I guess that the driver of "entity 7: a0000000.mipi_csi2_rx_subsystem" is only supportting the fmt:SRGGB8_1X8. I'm trying to typing the command to change the fmt. There is no error back to the consol. You can use the following command to test it. media-ctl -d /dev/media0 -V "\"a0000000.mipi_csi2_rx_subsystem\":0 [fmt: YUYV/1920x1080 field:none]" @CHRIS If I'm wrong, please correct me. @librabryantpl.dtsi is as attached in the first post. Yes, it does show rgb only as pixel format. I think this should have been handled by the Xilinx tools, as I have already selected the pixel format (YUV 4:2:2 8 bit) in the Vivado design. Do you know how I can add the support for my particular setup? The documentation is really lacking, there is no doc on possible configurations that can go in to device tree entry.

@chrisardo you have any suggestions?
