Good book for digital design and vhdl

Hi all,

I am a bit new to VHDL and I would like to get some of you guys' opinion on books you know that are good for VHDL while learning digital design. So what are some really good books out there?

Re: Good book for digital design and vhdl

c,

One book is "FPGA Prototyping by VHDL Examples" by Chu.

There are many out there to choose from.  Any choice you make is probably just fine (I have no strong opinion).

Other resources are using the VHDL standard, and examples found by any search engine, followed by the IP blocks you generate in Vivado for your design (use already working blocks as much as possible to lessen the work required).

Re: Good book for digital design and vhdl

I have "HDL Chip Design"  by Douglas Smith in hard-cover.

Covers VHDL and Verilog.

From there, make sure you get your hands on the IEEE updates to the languages you like most.

Verilog has updates to the language (and there's some COOL stuff in there worth knowing) that aged books like HDL Chip Design couldn't because the standards didn't exist.

(It's like having "The C Programming Language" from K & R when C has had standards updates since.)

Good reference stuff.

Many people including me think that the best VHDL book is Peter Ashenden's "Designer's Guide to VHDL"

Re: Good book for digital design and vhdl

Hi @calibroflower,

In addition to the excellent sources mentioned by our experts above, you can also refer 'Circuit Design and Simulation with VHDL, by Volnei A. Pedroni' which is a good book.

After you are done with some reading, can refer the 'HDL coding techniques' video from Xilinx: https://www.xilinx.com/video/hardware/basic-hdl-coding-techniques.html

and Chapter 4 page.61 of UG901: https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx2017_1/ug901-vivado-synthesis.pdf.

Regards,
Prathik
