Real Time Clock Implementation in FPGA

Jump to solution

Hi,

I'm a newbie to Xilinx FPGA. How should i implement real time clock or Time and Date Counter in FPGA?

Does Xilinx have any RTC core or IP for Artix 7?

Thanks a lot for advising.

A real-time clocks are usually implemented in a dedicated external low-power chip (with a battery) because it requires 24/7 power, which the FPGA is not guaranteed to have! On a typical external chip, the time/date is accessed via I2C or SPI.

Note: Xilinx just added internal real-time clock support (requires an external battery) in the UltraScale+ Zynq's on the PS side. But this doesn't sound like what you are asking about...
