Something major happened today and I want to be sure you didn’t miss it. Today, Xilinx announced the immediate upgrade of the Vivado Design Suite editions to Vivado Design Suite HLx. The new HLx editions include HL System Edition, HL Design Edition and HL WebPACK Edition. Besides the obvious name change, all editions of the Vivado Design Suite HLx—including the no-cost WebPACK Edition—now bundle in the Vivado HLS C/C++ synthesis tool that’s been in use by advanced users and early adopters for the last three years. This inclusion means you can now employ the Vivado tools to develop your FPGA-based design using any combination of three major design styles:

  1. Traditional HDL development
  2. IP-based design using IP Integrator
  3. C/C++ synthesis

Of course, each style has its advantages—and now you need not choose because you can freely intermix them using Vivado HLx. Here’s a conceptual diagram of a design flow based on Xilinx Vivado HLx, taken from the new Vivado HLx backgrounder:

The new Vivado HLx Editions complement the Xilinx SDx Development Environments (SDSoC, SDAccel, and SDNet), which are tailored for software and systems engineers. While the HLx methodology can automate platform design creation, the SDx family of development environments enable software-defined programming of such platform, using C, C++, OpenCL, or the emerging P4 language for packet processing.
